An organisation working for the rights of disabled persons today expressed concern over alleged "delay on part of the central government" in passage of Rights of Persons with Disabilities Bill and said it will launch a nationwide capaign over the issue in coming days.
The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Bill was introduced in the Rajya Sabha in February 2014. It was sent to the standing committee which submitted its report and recommendations in May 2015.
"It is regrettable that even after the passage of 18 months the government is yet to spell out its stand with regard to various concerns about the Bill that the disability rights organisations have raised, and the recommendations of the Standing Committee and the action that it proposes to take.
"This is inexplicable," said P Muralidharan of National Platform for the Rights of the Disabled (NPRD).
As part of the nationwide campaign, the representatives of the various disability organisations would be meeting Members of Parliament to urge them to raise the issue in Parliament and exert pressure on the government.
Also, these groups will hold demonstrations in state capitals on November 21 and also hold a rally on December 3, the World Disability Day.
