The demand was put forth by the leaders of the NGOs which met Home Minister H D R Lyngdoh and Election Minister J A Lyngdoh besides the officials from the election and the police department.
"We have asked the government to put on hold the enrolment drives through the special cells put up at the offices of the deputy commissioner and the subdivisions," Khasi Students Union President Daniel Khyriem told reporters after the meeting.
The four NGOs, the Khasi Students Union, the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People, the Synjuk Seng Samla Shnong and the Hynniewtrep National Youth Front, have announced a series of agitation in the state against the alleged inclusion of 'dubious' or D-voters in the state.
While the talks today were inconclusive, the NGOs said that the Election Commission should exempt Meghalaya from having special enrolment cells at the DCs' office and SDOs' office.
"Instead enrolment drives should be conducted at the village level to prevent any dubious voters from getting themselves enrolled in the electoral book of the state," Joe Marwein, Acting President of the FKJGP, said.
