To speed up construction of the Eastern Peripheral Expressway, NHAI Chairman Raghav Chandra today visited the sites and assured contractors of all possible help to resolve issues that include attempts by miscreants to obstruct work.
"The Supreme Court has directed police chiefs of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana to provide security for expeditious completion of the project in light of attempts by miscreants and vested interests obstructing the work," NHAI Chairman told contractors during the site visit.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone of the 135-km long Eastern Peripheral Expressway with an estimated cost of Rs 5,763 crore in November last year, along with Rs 2,274 crore Western Peripheral Expressway and a eight-laning project worth Rs 2,129 crore.
In order to expedite the project, the NHAI chief visited the contractor's camp at Palwal and the Bridge construction site on the Yamuna.
"During his interaction with all the five contractors viz. Gayatri Projects, Oriental Structural, Sadbhav Engineering, Jaiprakash Associates and Ashoka Buildcon on the site, he emphasized on the importance of the project in view of the directions of the Supreme Court to complete the project by July 2018 so as to decongest the capital city of Delhi," NHAI said in a statement.
The statement said attempts by miscreants and vested interests to obstruct the work had put hurdles in the execution of the project, but it is "expected that henceforth work will progress unimpeded".
The chairman inspected the high-end concrete pavers and other machinery.

"It is noteworthy that overall about Rs 150 crore worth of machinery has been mobilised on the ground, apart from laboratory and casting yards for each contractor," the statement said.
Work on the ambitious Expressway, with a plan to build it in 400 days, has kick-started in January after resolution of land acquisition issues.
According to available data, NHAI has transferred Rs 1,530 crore for land compensation, out of which Rs 1,335 crore has already been paid to people whose land was acquired.
The project work has been divided into six packages - 21-km stretch in Sonepat-Baghpat, 24.5 km stretch in Baghpat-Ghaziabad, 24.5-km stretch in Ghaziabad-GB Nagar, 22-km stretch in GN Nagar, 21-km stretch in GN Nagar-Faridabad and 22-km stretch in Faridabad-Palwal.
The project covers Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has earlier said, "The government is committed to decongesting Delhi. We have set an ambitious target. This is to complete the Eastern and Western Peripheral Expressway in 400 days."
Earlier, the deadline for the project was set as two-and-a-half years.
