NHRC asks TN govt to compensate man tortured in police custody

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed Tamil Nadu government to compensate a man who had alleged physical torture by police in custody.
Sarvanan Karuppasamy, chairman of World Human Rights Commission and Rescue Centre, had filed a complaint with the Commission against the police officials in connection with violence at Ambedkhar Law College in Chennai.
Karuppasamy had alleged that he was harassed by a senior police official from the Organized Crime Unit, CB CID, Coimbatore City.
He has also alleged that he was falsely implicated, arrested and subjected to severe physical torture in custody.
Taking cognisance of the complaint, the Commission has now directed the Tamil Nadu Government through its Chief Secretary, to pay compensation of Rs 15, 000 to Karuppasaamy. The Chief Secretary has been asked to submit a report in the matter within a week.
