NHRC notice to UP authorities over gangrape, murder of woman

National Human Rights Commission today issued notice to the authorities of Baghpat district in Uttar Pradesh in connection with a case where a woman was allegedly gangraped and set ablaze by four persons.
According to an official statement released today, the commission has issued notices to the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police, Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh calling for a report within two weeks.
The notices were issued after the commission took suo motu cognizance of a media report that a female labourer, who worked at a brick kiln was picked up by four persons, gang raped and set on fire to destroy evidence in the Chaugama area in Baghpat district of Uttar Pradesh. The family members were threatened of serious consequences in the event of making any complaint.
The report was carried on April 22 saying that the father of the victim was so terrorised that he kept mum for ten days after the incident till eventually he mustered courage to send a complaint by post to police.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the media report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of the victim woman.
