An apparent mix-up about jurisdiction has landed Pune city Police Commissioner Gulabrao Pol in a soup, with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issuing a direction for his arrest for "casual and mechanical" approach in dealing with a 2007 murder case in the district.
NHRC yesterday directed state's Chief Secretary to arrest and produce Pol before it in Delhi on January 28, claiming that his "casual and mechanical approach in the matter is indicative of wilful disobedience of commission's directions".
A Pune police spokesperson, however, said the matter pertained to a case of abduction and murder of a scheduled caste youth in Khed tehsil, and fell under the jurisdiction of Pune Rural Police.
"We will give a clarification to NHRC over jurisdiction," he said, adding that Pune city police had nothing to do with it.
The earlier summons issued by NHRC were received by Pune city police who forwarded them to the Superintendent of Pune Rural Police, who are handling the case filed on April 30,2007.
The victim's father has approached NHRC alleging inaction by local police in solving the case.
