NHRC seeks report from Assam govt and police

National Human Rights Commission today sought report from Assam government and police on allegations of firing by forest personnel at helpless villagers during Khagrabari violence.
According to an NHRC statement released today, notices in this regard have been served to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, Assam, calling for factual reports within two weeks.
The notices were issued after the Commission took suo moto cognizance of media reports that some of the survivors of violent attack by miscreants in Khagrabari village of Baksa district, Assam in which 20 persons had died, made a specific complaint to a team of CID of Assam Police that when the armed miscreants attacked the villagers, they rushed to the forest beat office in Khagrabari, but instead of helping them, the forest personnel allegedly fired at them and set some of the houses on fire.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights.
