Taking suo motu cognisance of a media report, the NHRC issued notices to West Bengal Chief Secretary and DGP to submit reports in the matter within four weeks.

One person was killed and nine others were injured in clashes and police firing in Tehatta area of Nadia district. Eight police personnel were also reported to have been hurt.

"Allegedly, some villagers demanding permission to organise Jagadhatri Puja at a particular venue had put up a blockade at the Houlia More in Tehatta.

"Finding it difficult to remove the blockade, the sub-divisional police officer of Tehatta, along with some police personnel, opened fire at them resulting in the killing of one person," an NHRC spokesperson said quoting a media report.
