NHRC takes cognisance of ragging in Assam govt school

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of injuries to 12 students due to alleged ragging in a government-run residential school in Assam's Chirang district.
NHRC issued notices to the secretary to Assam Elementary and School Education, deputy commissioner and police superintendent of Chirang district calling for reports within four weeks, a statement said today.
It has also asked the deputy commissioner to inform the Commission of the health status of the injured students.
At least 12 students were injured recently due to alleged ragging by seniors in the government-run Navodaya School in Chirang. Four of them reported broken bones.

The students who were all minors had taken admission to standards 7 and 8 last week. They were allegedly attacked with bamboo poles and sticks on July 29 night for attempting to avoid a 'ragging session' by seniors.
The school authorities allegedly tried to hush up the incident but the victims' parents lodged an FIR at the local police station.
