The exchange remained closed in morning session for 'Mahashivratri'.
At the Multi Commodity Exchange, nickel for delivery in February month shot up by Rs 10.40, or 1.49 per cent, to Rs 710.60 per kg in business turnover of 1,080 lots.
On similar lines, the metal for delivery in March contracts gained Rs 10.10, or 1.43 per cent to Rs 716.80 per kg in 275 lots.
Market analysts said a firm trend in select base metals overseas, led to the rise in nickel prices at futures trade.
