Banking, finance, metal, and healthcare sectors were the major losers of the day.
The NSE 50-share index fell by 76.05 points or 0.88 per cent to 8,615.25. The Nifty has dropped by 93.70 points or 1.08 per cent in two days.
In overseas stock markets, European and Asian stocks edged lower tracking decline in oil prices. US stocks closed modestly lower yesterday, amid mixed earnings and slide in oil prices.
The 50-share Nifty opened a tad higher at 8,657.30 and hovered between 8,657.30 and 8,596.60 before finishing at 8,615.25, showing a steep fall of 76.05 points, or 0.88 per cent.

Major index laggards included Axis Bank (7.85 per cent), Tata Motors (4.29 per cent), Tata Steel (4.01 per cent) and ICICI Bank (3.75 per cent).
The key outperformers were Idea (4.52 per cent), Kotak Bank (3.17 per cent), Hero MotoCorp (1.89 per cent), Bharti Airtel (1.89 per cent) and Maruti (1.52 per cent).
A total of 11,919.41 lakh shares changed hands in 87,64,519 trades. The market capitalisation of NSE stood at Rs 11,116,190 crore.
