In overseas markets, European stocks were trading lower as shares from the oil and gas sector fell as crude prices languished in a bear market.
Asian shares ended mixed as oil prices held steady in Asian deals after falling more than 2 per cent overnight on worries over whether OPEC-led output cuts would be able to rein in a three-year glut.
The NSE 50-share Nifty index opened higher at 9,642.65 and hovered in a range of 9,698.85 and 9,617.75 before ending at 9,630, a marginal fall of 3.60 points, or 0.04 per cent.
Sector-wise, Realty fell 1.58 per cent, Metal 1.38 per cent, Energy 0.73 per cent, Infra 0.55 per cent, FMCG 0.26 per cent and IT 0.23 per cent.

However, PSU Bank rose by 0.54 per cent, Finance Service 0.29 per cent and Pharma 0.16 per cent.
The broader markets underperformed as Nifty mid-cap and small-cap indices fell 0.76 per cent and 0.58 per cent, respectively.
Major index gainers were Sun Pharma (2.03 per cent), Ambuja Cement (1.91 per cent), Aurobindo Pharma (1.65 per cent), HDFC (1.57 per cent), Yes Bank (1.35 per cent), Zee (1.28 percent) and Ultratech Cement (1.27 per cent).
A total of 1,051 scrips declined, 623 advanced, while 83 remained unchanged.
Total securities that hit their price bands were 131.
Turnover in the cash segment rose to Rs 26,262.87 crore from Rs 21,632.98 crore yesterday.
A total of 15,783.50 lakh shares changed hands in 92,85,146 trades.
The market capitalisation of listed firms on the NSE stood at Rs 1,25,26,899.95 crore.
