Nifty snaps 4-day rise on profit booking; mid-caps shine

The benchmark Nifty snapped its four-day winning streak to end 3 points lower at 9,621.25 today owing to profit booking mainly in metal, IT, media and energy counters.
Lacklustre trading was witnessed almost for the entire session, except for a brief spell in mid-afternoon trade during which it a hit fresh intra-day high of 9,649.60 amid consolidation.
In overseas markets, European stocks were trading slightly higher. Asian stocks ended on a mixed note. China stocks, which re-opened after a long holiday, settled in the green.
US equities closed lower yesterday as investors digested key economic data, but a rise in tech stocks helped cap losses.
The NSE 50-share Nifty index opened higher at 9,636.55 and hovered between 9,649.60 and 9,609.25 before finishing at 9,621.25, a marginal loss of 3.30 points, or 0.03 per cent.
It saw an intra-day movement of about 40.35 points.

Sector-wise, metal fell 1.53 per cent, IT 0.56 per cent, media 0.52 per cent, energy 0.24 per cent and PSU bank 0.18 per cent.
Gainers included realty (1.13 per cent), auto (0.64 per cent), private bank (0.62 per cent), bank (0.50 per cent), pharma (0.39 per cent) and finance service (0.35 per cent).
In the broader market, mid-cap and small-cap indices gained 0.57 per cent and 1.07 per cent, respectively.
Major index losers were Vedanta (2.55 per cent), Infosys (1.92 per cent), Coal India (1.92 percent), Tata Power (1.70 per cent), Bharti Infratel (1.52 per cent) and Hindalco (1.35 per cent).
M&M climbed 4.10 per cent, followed by Indiabulls Housing Finance (4.22 per cent), Ultratech Cement (2.77 per cent), Lupin (2.75 per cent), IOC (2.36 per cent), PowerGrid (2.13 per cent) and GAIL (1.86 per cent).
A total of 953 scrips advanced, 718 declined, while 70 remained unchanged.
Total securities that hit their price bands were 152.
Turnover in the cash segment rose to Rs 39,298.24 crore from Rs 24,189.46 crore yesterday.
A total of 18,098.85 lakh shares changed hands in 1,31,20,797 trades.
The market capitalisation of listed firms on the NSE stood at Rs 1,24,16,788.86 crore.
