Today's announcement is a setback to the West African country. Nigeria's removal from WHO's list of polio-endemic countries in October had meant the entire African continent was free of the crippling disease.
WHO's statement says two children have been paralyzed by polio in northeastern Borno state. Parts of the state had been cut off until recently by Boko Haram's Islamic extremist uprising.
WHO says it and Nigeria's government are working urgently to prevent more children from being paralyzed, with large-scale immunizations and other measures.
