A Nigerian national, who allegedly duped Rs 10 lakh from a job aspirant by sending him fraudulent mails in the name of British High Commission and Hilton Hotel, London, has been arrested, police said today.
According to police, Ajayi Sunday Olufemi (28) was arrested by Delhi police from Goregaon, Mumbai, and recovered Rs 70,000, one laptop, three wrist watches and three mobile phones from him.
"A complaint was received from one Sagar Nandi regarding cheating of Rs 10 lakh through e-mails. He was initially offered a job offer allegedly an email id of Hilton Hotel and later was also sent a letter of appointment.
"Subsequently, he was asked to deposit money in the name of application fee, health insurance fee etc following which Nandi deposited cash of Rs 10,12,400 in different accounts. He was being contacted through Indian as well as UK phone numbers," said Additional Deputy Commissioner (North-West) A Koan.
Nandi got suspicious when he got a call asking him to deposit 3,000 pounds more for VISA charges from a UK number at 9 AM (Indian Time) and 4.30 UK time.
Realising that no one would be working that early, he called Hilton Hotel and British High Commission to verify the job offer and visa charges respectively and came to know that he had been cheated, police said.
Following this, Nandi approached Maurya Enclave police station and filed a cyber fraud case.
"The mobile number of the caller was put on surveillance and the location of the mobile phone was traced in Mumbai. Following this trail, the police team finally succeeded in nabbing Olufemi from Goregaon," said Koan.
