Nine people, eight of them belonging to a family, were killed when a tanker collided with an auto-rickshaw in which they were travelling near Visavada village in Porbandar district, police said.
The incident took place late last night, police said.
"The impact of the collision was so severe that the rickshaw was completely mangled, leaving all the eight passengers and the auto driver dead on the spot," an official attached to Miyani Marine Police station of Porbandar district said.
After the accident, the unidentified driver of the tanker ran away from the spot leaving the vehicle behind.
The deceased were identified as Kamlesh Sukhanandi (40), Mamata Sukhanandi (38), Bansari Sukhanandi (16), Shailesh Sukhanandi (35), Lila Sukhanandi (30), Nikita Sukhanandi (18), Ashok Kumbavat (26), Ankita Kumbavat (22) and auto driver Shamji Kanakia, a resident of Porbanadar.
"Except Kanakia, all others were relatives. When they were returning to Porbandar city after visiting a temple on Dwarka road last night, the driver of the tanker lost control over his vehicle and rammed it into the auto, killing all the occupants on the spot," said the official.
A case of rash driving has been registered against the unidentified truck driver, the official added.
