Nine of a family killed in truck-auto collision

Nine persons, including four women of a family, were killed and a child was injured today when a truck hit an autorickshaw in Mayurbhanj district.
The three-wheeler from Balasore was bound for Baripada when the truck rammed into it at Salabani under Baisinga police station, on the busy Kolkata-Chennai NH-18, Betonati SDPO Anil Patra said.
Family members of a vegetable vendor in Baripada town were returning after attending a family function in the ill-fated autorickshaw, Patra said, adding that the truck was seized and the driver arrested.
Barring the child, all occupants of the autorickshaw including vegetable vendor Nurul died in the accident, he said.

The injured child was taken to a nearby hospital.
Angry villagers staged a road blockade for some time demanding compensation and remedial measures to prevent such mishaps.
