Nine students suspended for ragging

Nine students of the polytechnic college in the city were today suspended for allegedly ragging and beating two juniors, a senior official of the Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU) said today.
Priyansh Shah, a student of first year diploma civil engineering, had told reporters here yesterday that some senior students had asked him to drink water mixed with spit.
When he refused, they beat him up and when his friend Akash Patel tried to intervene, he was hit with a cricket bat.
Patel, who sustained head injuries in the attack, was admitted to government-run SSG Hospital here and police had registered a case. The accused students were absconding, the police said.
Vice Chancellor of MSU, Yogesh Singh, today suspended nine students who allegedly belonged to two rival groups Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
Talking to PTI here today, Prof Amit Dholakiya officer on special duty and registrar in-charge of MSU said, "these students are suspended from the University with immediate effect in view of their prima facie involvement in the incident of violence and complaint of ragging."

The suspended students have been identified as Vikas Dube, Harpalsinh Rana, Kuldip Modi (all former polytechnic students), Jayesh Balai (student of Technology and Engineering faculty), Sachin Patel, Mayur Patel, Siddharth Zala, Maulik Parmar and Ketan Dhamalia (all polytechnic students), he said.
"These suspended students are prohibited from attending classes, appearing in examinations, staying in the university hostels till further orders," he said.
According to Dholakiya, the university has also set up a six-member committee to inquire into the incident, which is expected to file a report soon.
