Claiming that speedy trial of cases in 2006 had helped strengthen law and order situation in Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today said conviction graph is now going down and asked police, public prosecutors and others to ensure faster disposal of criminal cases.
"It was decided at that time (in 2006) to prepare a database of officials, mainly policemen...To help public prosecutors deal with the case speedily," Kumar told a seminar here.
"Due to this, in 2006 a total of 1609 accused were prosecuted under Arms Act. This had helped create a good environment and encouraged people to come forward for testifying as witness," he said in presence of Chief Secretary Anjani Kumar Singh, state police chief P K Thakur and others.
"Unfortunately, conviction graph has gone down now. The environment created in 2006 has eased up now," he said.
The CM said if DGP and Additional Director General of Police took feedback from SPs, disposal of cases can be made faster, he added.
The CM emphasised on proper formulation and timely filing of chargesheet. He advised policemen to talk to public prosecutor beforehand for proper draft of chargesheet.
