Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and RJD president Lalu Prasad today paid respect to veteran politician Ramlakhan Singh Yadav and remembered his contribution in boosting education among the backward classes.
The two were together at a function to celebrate the birth anniversary of Ramlakhan Singh Yadav, veteran Congress leader, who also served as a minister in the state and at the Centre.
"In the field of education, Ramlakhan Singh Yadav had unforgettable contribution. Backward class people lagged behind
in education, for whom the veteran leader was an inspiration," Kumar said speaking on the occasion.
Over a dozen schools and colleges were established in the name of Yadav, he said.
"Those having power have their eyes set on reservation... There is a need to maintain unity against such efforts," Kumar said.
He recalled sweet memories of his close interaction with the veteran Congress leader.
"When I became MLA for the first time in 1985, I was among five members of a Legislative Assembly committee headed by Ramlakhan Singh Yadav. The committee was constituted to probe some issue and I learnt a lot watching the working style of the late leader," Kumar said.
Ramlakhan Singh Yadav contributed immensely in laying strong foundation of Congress in those days, he said, adding "But, when he felt he was not given due respect within his party, he quit and successfully fought elections on a Janata Dal ticket in 1991 from Ara."
RJD president Lalu Prasad also fondly remembered the contributions of Ramlakhan Singh Yadav.
A host of leaders including the former MP's son Chandra Prakash, his grandson and RJD MLA Rajvardhan and senior JD(U) leader Shyam Rajak spoke on the occasion.
