"We urge the prime minister to declare May Day as a gazetted holiday throughout the country under the Negotiable Instrument Act as a befitting tribute to the May Day martyrs and recognising the valuable contribution of the working class in the all-round development of the country," NMC President Subash Shastri said in a memorandum to the prime minister.
He said because of the May Day martyrs, the working class got their rights across the world and India being the largest and most vibrant democracy and the frontline welfare state should also declare May 1 as gazetted holiday.
He also appealed to the prime minister to direct the Vice Chairman of Niti Ayog, Arvind Panigraian, to earmark Rs 9,000 crore as special fund at the Jammu and Kashmir government's disposal to ward off likely effect of the implementation of recommendations of seventh pay commission arrears along with incorporating financial implications of regularisation of 61,000 daily-rated workers.
