The Madras High Court today dismissed the anticipatory bail plea of an IAS officer for allegedly cheating a doctor of Rs 50 lakh on the promise of securing an MBBS seat for his daughter.
"Considering the facts and circumstances of the case and taking note of the fact that the matter is pending for a long time, I am of the opinion that it is not a fit case to grant anticipatory bail," Justice R Subbiah said.
The prosecution case was that the IAS officer Mohanraj, now a Deputy Secretary in Transport department, and another person approached Dr M A Nizar Ahammed and assured him they would get an MBBS seat for his daughter in a private medical college within 15 days on payment of Rs 50 lakh. The money was paid in various installments to them.
As nothing came of it, Nizar asked them to repay the amount. After several reminders, the duo issued two cheques for Rs 25 lakh each, which were returned by the bank, citing insufficient funds.'
The doctor then filed a police complaint.
Apprehending arrest, both Mohanraj and Selvakumar filed anticipatory bail petitions.
