With security tightened in West Bengal districts bordering Bangladesh in view of violence in the neighbouring country, senior police officials today denied reports of influx of people from that country.
"There has been no influx of Bangladeshi citizens to our state. Security has been beefed up in all district police station areas of the state," ADG (law and order) Banibrata Basu said.
Large-scale violence erupted in Bangladesh after a top leader of Jamaat-e-Islami was sentenced to death for crimes committed against humanity during the 1971 liberation war.
In Malda, the BSF has been asked to intensify patrolling along the border.
"I do not know from where are these reports of influx from Bangladesh to Malda district are coming. There has been no such incident. There is strict vigil in bordering areas," said Prasun Banerjee, police superintendent, Malda.
Export and import have been suspended and the BSF is in touch with Bangladesh Border Guards for the return of 172 Indian drivers and helpers stranded near Sona Masjid in Chapainawaabganj district of that country since last Thursday, according to some media reports.
