No laxity will be tolerated in updating NRC process: Sonowal

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today said that no leniency from officers of any rank will be tolerated in the National Register of Citizens (NRC) updating process, as he asked the district Deputy Commissioners to immediately remove employees who are casual in their job.
Speaking at the Deputy Commissioners' Conference here, Sonowal said Assam being the first state in the country to implement the NRC updating exercise, the DCs must maintain utmost care to ensure error-free verification of documents.
He directed the DCs to review the NRC updating process every week for minimum two hours stating that people of Assam have high hopes from this exercise.
The Chief Minister further made a call to the Deputy Commissioners to work harder and exert extreme responsibility as leaders and motivate the down the line officers and employees to ensure effective and timely implementation of all government programmes.
He asked the DCs to remain alert and proactive and build a congenial environment taking all communities into confidence for charting a new era of development in the state.
Reiterating the state government's commitment for providing land deeds to 30,000 landless indigenous people of the state, Sonowal asked the DCs to immediately conduct surveys to identify the background of the encroachers and carry out eviction drive with caution.
Stating that the government of Assam is actively working on a project called "Discovery of Assam", he directed the DCs to tap the resources available in their respective districts including human, natural, cultural and communication, among others.
