Chief Minister Siddaramaiah today said there was no proposal to abolish the Legislative Council.
The Chief Minister's brief intervention came as members of BJP and JDS raised the issue in the House.
The Upper House also had democratically elected members apart from nominated ones. Legislative council was a thinkers and intelligentia House, said Capt.Ganesh Karnik (BJP).
JD(S) leader in the House Basavaraj Horatti said stalwarts like D.V.Gundappa, Chandrashekhar Patil and Basavlingappa were members of the House and contributed immensely.
Upper house is not a photocopy of the Legislative Assembly, he said. Legislative council was a pride of democratic set up, he said and quoted Dr.B.R.Ambedkar mooting the concept of having upper house (Rajya Sabha) terming it as an institution comprising character based group of people.
Veeranna Mattikatti, former chairman of the house, said for smooth functioning of democratic set up both assembly and council are necessary at the state level and Loksabha and Rajyasabha in the union government level.
