Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday announced a freeze on allotting new licences for rent-a-cab and rent-a-bike services for the next three years.
The chief minister said the decision was taken with an objective to regulate the trade.
As many as 18,000 bikes and 2,500 cabs are operating in the state through the rental services, which are quite popular with tourists.
"For the next three years, no new licences for rent-a-cab and rent-a-bike will be given, as there is no need to increase their numbers," Sawant told reporters.
If the existing vehicles are scrapped, their replacement with the new one will also not allowed, he said.
The chief minister said the tourists must ensure that they abide by laws.
He informed half of the total 365 victims who died in the road accidents last year were tourists.
