West Bengal Panchayat minister Subrata Mukherjee today sought to play down the controversy over Jadavpur University scholar Geetashri Sarkar stating the government was not under any pressure over the issue.
Mukherjee, who had earlier said Geetashri followed a non-violent way to raise her protest by refusing to accept the medal from the JU Chancellor, today, however, remained non-commital when reporters again asked for his views on the issue and merely stated, "sarkarer kono chap nei (no pressure on the government in the matter)."
He did not say anything else or elaborate what he meant by saying there was no pressure on the government.
Mukherjee, who was here to attend the 'Jangalmahal utsav' on the last day, said under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's leadership there had been remarkable progress in 100 days' work and local area development projects in the 'Jangalmahal' (forest stretch) belt of West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia.
Geetashri's refusal to accept her citation in presence of JU VC Avijit Chakroborty had earlier been criticised by Mukherjee's cabinet colleague Urban Development minister Firhad Hakim while TMC MP Sugato Bose had apparently come to the girl's side stating she had not hurt or insulted anybody.
