There is no proposal to increase the retirement age of judges of Supreme Court and High Courts, the government today informed the Rajya Sabha.
In written reply to a question on raising salaries and allowances of judges, Law Minister D V Sadananda Gowda said, "It will take place once the salary of Secretaries to Government is re-fixed."
"There is no proposal to increase the age of retirement of Judges of High Courts and the Supreme Court under consideration of the government," he said.
The minister said the salary of higher constitutional functionaries including the judges of Supreme Court and High Courts are fixed by making necessary adjustments with reference to the pay scales suggested by the Pay Commissions and approved by government for the level of Secretaries to the Government of India.
In reply to another question on the entry of foreign legal firms, Gowda said the matter is under consideration of the government in consultation with the Bar Council of India.
