Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal is not in favour of supply of processed food to school children under the Mid Day Meal Scheme, an official statement said today.
The statement comes a day after various issues relating to promotion of food processing sector were discussed in a meeting between Badal and Pepsico Chairman Indra Nooyi.
"... The Minister did not support any proposal for supply of processed food under the Mid Day Meal scheme," the statement said.
However, in the meeting, she said there exist opportunities for companies to produce nutritious and healthy food for school going children which could be used by working mothers, especially in urban areas, it said.
The government also expressed concerns over the high sugar and high fat in some processed foods. Nooyi said PepsiCo is already paying attention to the need of introducing healthy products in the market, it added.
