Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal today said the government is not considering any proposal to hive off Coal India arms into independent companies.
Government think tank Niti Aayog has suggested in its draft National Energy Policy to spin off Coal India's seven arms into independent firms and imbibe competition, saying the coal behemoth was supplying coal to consumers at higher price.
On this issue, Goyal said, "There is no such proposal. We welcome the suggestion of Niti Aayog."
About stressed imported coal-based plants of Tata Power, Adani Power and Essar Power, he said, "I have suggested that these plants should look at technical solutions to domestic coal. Under SHAKTI scheme, we will come out with a policy to allow these plants to bid for domestic coal."
These plants are grappling with an issue of compensatory tariffs after the Supreme Court disallowed to pass on higher cost of imported coal to discoms.
