The Norwegian Nobel Committee said Tuesday that there are 228 individuals and 148 organizations among the contenders for the prestigious prize.
The five-member committee typically receives more than 200 nominations for the prize, including from governments, lawmakers, university professors and previous peace prize laureates. The earlier record, 278 candidates, was set in 2014.
The committee keeps candidates secret for 50 years, but those submitting the nominations sometimes reveal their suggestions to the public.
