The Supreme Court today termed as "arbitrary" a decision of Uttar Pradesh government to allot land to former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Sigh, former state chief secretary Neera Yadav and her two daughters in Noida and sought their responses as to why the allotments will not be quashed.
A bench headed by Justice G S Singhvi directed them to file their responses within six weeks.
"We direct that notices be issued to all the persons named in paragraph 16 to show cause as to why allotments/alternative allotments made in their favour may not be quashed," the bench said.
It held the decision taken by New Okhla Industrial Development Authority (NOIDA) is arbitrary and said there is "merit" in criticism of the decision taken by it in cases of large number of persons including Suruchi Yadav, Sanskriti Yadav (Neera Yadav's daughters), Neera Yadav, senior IAS officer Rajiv Kumar, Shankar Sitapati and M/s. Flex Industries.
The court passed the order on a plea filed by NOIDA Entrepreneurs Association challenging the allotments of land to these persons.
"What is most surprising is that originally plot No. B-88/51 measuring 450 sq. Meters was allotted to Suruchi Yadav but the same was converted into plot No.A-32/44 apparently because the land in Sector-44 was costlier.
