The bandh period has remained peaceful so far with security measures strengthened in the sensitive pockets of the district to counter any untoward incident, police said.
Educational institutions, markets, post offices and banks remained closed and public transport kept off the road in the bandh that began from 5 a m yesterday.
Work in government offices and other establishments was hit in the district headquarters Haflong, besides Mahur, Harangajao and some other parts of the district, the sources said.
The bandh was called to press for creation of a new district under 3(C) of Article 244(2) and 275(1) of the Sixth Schedule by various tribal organisations, including the Indigenous Peoples Forum, N C Hills Indigenous Student Forum and N C Hills Indigenous Woman Forum.
