Normal life affected due to 12-hour bandh in central Assam

Normal life was affected in Morigaon district and parts of neighbouring Nagaon and Kamrup (Metro) districts following a day long central Assam bandh called today by the All Tiwa Students Union (ATSU), said a senior district administration official.
No untoward incident was reported during the bandh. Shops, markets, private offices, educational institutions and banks remained closed during the 12-hour bandh which started at 5 AM, the official said.
Vehicles kept off the National Highway 37, though train services were normal.

The public sector Hindustan Paper Corporation mill at Jagiroad in Morigaon district functioned normally with its employees escorted by the CISF, the official said.

The ATSU called the bandh protesting the assault of two of its office bearers by the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of Tiwa Autonomous Council, Rama Kanta Deuri, yesterday.
Meanwhile, the Tiwa National Solidarity Forum, of which Deuri is the president, had opposed the bandh claiming that the ATSU office bearers - Biju Pator and Paramananda Bordoloi - had issued extortion notices to the CEM.
Deuri said he had filed a criminal case against the duo in Morigaon police station and they were arrested yesterday.
