The mayor of North Delhi Municipal Corporation has ordered the Commissioner to conduct two separate inquiries into charges of corruption in procurement of books and issuing of parking tickets.
Congress' Mukesh Goel alleged 8,795 books purchased by the corporation for distribution to libraries and civic body schools in 2009-10 were at a much higher cost.
"The book titled 'sachitra rashtriya prateek evam gaurav kosh' was purchased at a cost of Rs 256.75 in 2009-10. The same book was procured in 2010-11 at a cost of Rs 94.25. The only difference between the two is that the former was hard-bound while the other had a simple cover," said Goel while producing the two books in the House.
"How is it possible that the binding of the book costs over Rs 160," he said.
Mayor Azad Singh directed Commissioner P K Gupta to investigate the matter.
Raising another issue, Goel presented two parking tickets from Gandhi Maidan Parking at Chandni Chowk which allegedly showed that the contractors were charging Rs 200 more from people for monthly parking.
"The brown ticket is the authentic ticket on which basis people are charged Rs 600 as monthly parking charges. But the contractors have printed their own yellow tickets on which they charge Rs 200 more," alleged the leader of the opposition waving the tickets.
The NDMC Commissioner will also look into this matter, said the Mayor.
