The 77-year-old Oscar-winning actress, an anti-war activist, visited Hanoi, North Vietnam in 1972 to survey the effect of bombings in the region when the controversial photograph was clicked, which led many to believe that she was against the US military.
Fonda received major backlash by a number of Americans, who gave her the nickname 'Hanoi Jane'.
The actress once again addressed the photograph during an appearance at Weinberg Center for the Arts in Frederick, Maryland this past weekend. Her trip saw a protest by military veterans, who stood outside the venue on Saturday evening to protest her appearance.
"I'm a lightning rod. This famous person goes and does something that looks like I'm against the troops, which wasn't true, but it looked that way, and I'm a convenient target. So I understand," Fonda said.
The actress, however, does not regret traveling to North Vietnam, saying it was "an incredible experience.
