Ian Paisley, the firebrand Protestant preacher-politician who led opposition to compromise with the IRA for decades in Northern Ireland, died today aged 88.
The former First Minister of the region and Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) leader, who was one of the Northern Ireland's most polarising politician, had been ill for some time.
In a statement, Baroness Eileen Paisley said: "My beloved husband, Ian, entered his eternal rest this morning.
"Although ours is the grand hope of reunion, naturally as a family we are heartbroken. We loved him and he adored us, and our earthly lives are forever changed."
Paisley, who became Lord Bannside in 2010, led opposition to any accommodation with republicans for decades and became known for his fiery rhetoric.
As charismatic leader of the strongly Christian DUP, he opposed successive political deals including the Anglo-Irish and Good Friday Agreements but agreed to power-sharing with Sinn Fein in 2007 following that party's acceptance of the new police force.
Paisley was widely known as "Dr No" because of his litany of rejections.
He ended up leading a power-sharing executive at Stormont, the Northern Irish Parliament, although he had supported the strike to bring one down 30 years earlier.
