The Chhattisgarh High Court today issued notices to Union Ministry of Finance, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and four banks on a PIL challenging revision of transaction charges for savings and salary accounts.
The division bench of Chief Justice T B Radhakrishnan and Justice P Sam Koshy served notices to Ministry of Finance, RBI, SBI, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and Axis Bank.
The petition has been filed by Saleem Kazi, a lawyer.
Advocate Ashish Shrivastav, who represented the petitioner, said the court demanded notices are returnable within four weeks.
The petitioner has objected to the banks charging customers for not maintaining a minimum balance in account, for withdrawing money after four free transactions a month and revision of other charges, he said.
These actions violated the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934, Banking Regulation Act, 1949 and some Constitutional provisions, the PIL said.
