Notification issued for Punjab municipal council polls

Punjab Election Commission today issued notification for elections to 123 municipal councils and by-election to one nagar panchayat ward in the state as it announced nominations for the local body open.
State Election Commissioner Shivinder Singh Brar also announced that code of conduct has come into force across all poll-bound wards and one ward in Nagar Panchayat of Bariwala district Sri Muktsar Sahib which will go for a by-election.
"Code of conduct shall come into force immediately from today and will operate in all areas that fall within the jurisdiction of these 123 Municipal Councils/Nagar Panchayats and Nagar Panchayat where a bye poll is to be held and will end on February 27," Brar said.
The last date for filing nominations shall be February 13, date of scrutiny shall be February 14 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is February 16, he said.
The polling shall be conducted on February 25 and the counting of votes will be taken up soon thereafter at the polling booth itself, the official added.
A total electorate of about 28,50,000 will participate in the polls for 2062 wards in approximately over 3500 polling booths, Brar said.
The State Election Commissioner stated all required election materials have been dispatched to the districts and the electronic voting machines (EVMs) are currently under inspection for being declared election worthy.
The Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab has been requested to ensure proper and adequate security for the electoral process, he said.
