Notorious chain snatcher held; over 3 kg gold ornaments seized

A notorious criminal, allegedly involved in over a hundred chain snatching offences, has been arrested from the city and 3.46 kg of gold ornaments recovered from him, police said today.
Babar alias Baquar Akram Ali, a native of Bidar district of Karnataka was nabbed by the police yesterday for committing as many as 102 offences of chain snatching in the city and in Medak district of Telangana, they said.
"Babar, along with his associates committed 102 chain snatching offences during 2012 to 2015," a release by Hyderabad Police said.
Along with Babar, a goldsmith identified as K Ram Prasad, who also hails from Bidar, was also arrested on charge of receiving the stolen valuables.
According to police, the accused used high-speed bikes to commit chain snatching offences and mostly targetted ladies walking in lanes or bylanes at secluded areas. They approached the victims from behind or from opposite directions.
"Babar is a habitual and most wanted chain snatcher in Hyderabad, Cyberabad Commissionerates and Medak district. Previously, he had been arrested by Mumbai police in a cheating case. After his release from jail, he started committing chain snatching crimes and used to threaten the victims with a knife if they resisted," police said.
Efforts are on to nab five other accused, who are absconding, they said.
