The decision, taken recently at a meeting of EDMC's House, will benefit dependents of around 35,000 daily wagers, contract workers employed temporarily on class IV posts, said a senior officer of the civic body.
The benefit is already available to eligible dependents of regular employees.
However, since the death of a temporary worker can create a livelihood crisis for the deceased's family, the civic body decided to extend the benefit to their dependents too on humanitarian ground, he said.
