NRI Commission takes cognisance of fraud, issues notices

The NRI Commission of Punjab today issued notices to the state Home Secretary and Commissioner of Police Jalandhar to submit a report by May 31 regarding the fraud by travel agents with 13 youths.
The NRI Commission has taken suo-motu cognisance of media reports on allegations of fraud levelled against local travel agents by 13 youths who had returned from Iraq, a spokesman of the NRI Commission said here.
Travel agents Parminder Singh, Sunil Kumar and Saheb, with their office in the Rama Mandi area, had sent these youths to Iraq in exchange of Rs 15 Lakh and promised them jobs, he said adding, the promises were not kept and the youths were forced to spend tensed days in a foreign country.
One of their companions Jagdeep Singh, is still held hostage by goons in Iraq, as he could not arrange Rs 50,000 and a video showing their son surrounded by people carrying lethal weapons, is with the family, he said.
The travel agents are absconding and their offices are locked up, the spokesman added.
