NRI sammelan in Punjab next year

During the sammelan, the state government will announce a comprehensive package for NRI Punjabis settled in various countries, he said.

Majithia, the NRI Affairs minister, along with Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal reviewed the working of the department.

The first two days of the session will be held in Chandigarh and the last day in Jalandhar.

Sukhbir said the NRI Affairs department has to adopt a pro-active approach and open an interactive channel of communication with the NRI fraternity besides inculcating a sense of confidence among Punjabis settled abroad.

Expressing concern over illegal occupation of properties of NRIs in Punjab, he asked N S Kang, Principal Secretary NRI Affairs, to form a sub-committee with the IGP NRI Affairs and come out with a legal framework to ensure protection of NRI properties.

Worried over rising cases of illegal immigration and travel agents fleecing innocent youths, he said the state government has already given its approval to the Human Trafficking Act and is awaiting assent of the Union government in this regard.
