"There is a need for nuclear power in India. Contrary to the common perception that nuclear power is not safe, the fact is that nuclear power is the safest among hydro and thermal modes of power generation," Swapnesh Kumar Malhotra, Head, Public Awareness Division, and Department of Atomic Energy spokesperson said.
He was speaking at the valedictory function of the National Electrical Summit, organised by the Federation of Gujarat Industries (FGI) and Society of Power Engineers (SPE), in collaboration with the Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation (GETCO).
S K Negi, MD of GETCO (knowledge partners for the summit) said investment to the tune of Rs 6,40,000 crore is needed, through government and private sector, for India's power sector during the 12th Five Year Plan period.
Power Corporation of India executive director (western Region ) R K Singh said that out of five grids, the growth rate of northern Grid is about 22 per cent, whereas national growth in system network is 10-11 per cent.
Discussions on renewable sources of energy were held at the conference.
FGI senior vice president Amit Patel, Power System Operation Corporation CEO S K Soonee, chief guest Dr M Ramamoorty also delved into various aspects of power generation and effective transmission.
