The number of cultivators has declined by 11.66 per cent in the predominated-agriculture state of Chhattisgarh between 2001 and 2011 even as the number of farm labourers has increased by 9.8 per cent in the same period, according to census statistics 2011 released today.
The number of cultivators declined from 43,11,131 in 2001 to 40,04,796 in 2011, while the percentage of cultivators declined from 44.54 per cent to 32.88 per cent, Census (Chhattisgarh) Director Renu Pillay told reporters here.
At the same time, there was an increase in agricultural labourers to 41.80 per cent from 31.94 per cent, she said.
"We find there has been a decline among cultivators, whereas there has been an increase in agricultural labourers," Pillay said.
The statistics revealed Chhattisgarh's population soared to 2,55,45,198 crore over the last 10 years which is an increase of around 50 lakh, while the sex ratio has gone up to 991 per 1000 in 2011 from 989 in the year 2001.
It also indicated that the pressure on land in the rural heartland may be pushing farmers out of their land.
