The Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK) volunteers participated in International Day of Yoga celebrations in 623 districts across the country, a senior NYK official today said.
Hundreds of volunteers from the Kendra, which functions under the Ministry of Youth Affairs, took part in the Delhi edition of the grand event at the Connuaght Place (CP).
Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs Vijay Goel attended the yoga events hosted in the streets lining the famed Raj-era market in central Delhi in the morning.
"Our (NYK) volunteers were at the CP also. They participated in events in all state capitals and district headquarters. Altogether they spread out in 623 districts across all states.
"The volunteers were trained by yoga gurus in the run up to the celebrations," the official said.
Nehru Yuva Kendras were established in the year 1972 with the objective of providing rural youth avenues to take part in the process of nation building as well providing opportunities for the development of their personality and skills.
In the year 1987-88, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) was set up as an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, to oversee working of these Kendras.
NYKS is the largest grassroots level youth organisation and channelises the power of youth on the principles of voluntarism, self-help and community.
