With an eye to attracting more students form India to pursue education in their country, the New Zealand Consulate General in Mumbai has announced that it will now be adding an education promotion and market development role to its functions there.
The Mumbai Consulate General currently attends to consular, trade, investment, tourism and visa functions.
The addition of an education adviser will facilitate the development of business and the wider relationship between India and New Zealand, New Zealand Consul General, Gavin Young said.
"Our student numbers from India have continued to grow. And, while currently we get a majority of our students from the northern states, having a presence in Mumbai will enable us to focus more on the west and south of the country, where interest in New Zealand is also high," Education New Zealand Regional Director (South Asia), Ziena Jalil, said.
According to a statement, more than 11,000 students from India study in New Zealand.
Jalil said New Zealand has put in place policies to make the country a top choice for international students.
According to immigration New Zealand Area Manager at Mumbai, Nathanael Mackay, "New Zealand government has announced changes to our work rights programme which will allow more international students to work while they study, enabling them to gain valuable business experience".
