President Barack Obama says Australia's new prime minister has accepted an invitation to the White House.
Obama says newly elected Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull likely will visit Washington this winter.
The president announced the visit after a meeting with the prime minister on the sidelines of an economic summit in Manila. It was the two leaders' first formal meeting since Turnbull was elected prime minister in September.
Obama told reporters the leaders discussed the fight against the Islamic extremism and the need to ramp up pressure against the Islamic State group.
Australia has contributed air power to the US-led coalition fighting the group in Iraq and Syria.
Turnbull says Australia will continue "shoulder to shoulder" with the US in the mission.
