The Olympic Council of Asia today included Kurash, a folk wrestling style practiced in Central Asia, in the sport program of the 18th Asian Summer Games at its General Assembly meeting in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.
OCA today officially unveiled the sport program of the 18th Asian Summer Games to be held in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia from August 18 to September 2, 2018.
For the first time in history, Kurash has been included as an official sport into the program of the OCA's flagship event, which is widely acknowledged as the second largest multi sport Games after the Summer Olympics.
Jagdish Tytler, Chairman of International Kurash Association (IKA), said he is happy that the sport would be a part of the Asian Summer Games.
"We have waited for it long and we all have worked hard to achieve this goal. I am happy to inform that the Kurash family is getting bigger every year and I am sure that it will unite the world one day. I want to thank the IKA President, OCA President and all those who are involved in Kurash including the coaches, referees and players," Tytler, who is also the President of Kurash Association of India, said.
According to the program revealed today, there would be 15 medal events for Kurash in the Asian Games 2018, seven for male weight categories and eight for female competitions.
Kurash will also feature in the official program of the 2016 Asian Beach Games in Vietnam and 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Turkmenistan.
