Odisha government has decided to install CCTV cameras in hostels run by the ST and SC Development Department for the safety of the tribal students.
This was revealed by ST/SC Development, Minorities & Backward Classes Welfare Minister Ramesh Majhi here.
"Steps are being taken to install CCTVs at the ST/SC hostels across the state. The State Police Housing and Welfare Corporation has been given the responsibility to invite tender for installation of CCTVs at the hostels," Majhi told reporters here.
The minister informed that of the 7,000 hostels run by the department, 1000 hostels would be under the cover of CCTVs in the first phase. He said the government is focusing on the the girls education and CCTV installation will further ensure safety of female inmates in hostels.
Around 5 lakh students from across the state are lodged at 7,000 hostels run by the department. The cameras will also be installed in the hostels under School & Mass Education department in which the ST/SC students are staying, he said.
The government action came following reports of of harassment cases at such hostels. Some teachers have also been suspended over harassment cases. Even sexual harassment cases have been received by the department, an official said.
